It is an honor to have PT Ann Cools in Portugal with Centro de Formação Clínica das Conchas for the second time lecturing new themes regarding the shoulder.
Formação Clínica das Conchas - Doctor Ann Cools, how was your first time experience lecturing in Portugal in 2017?
Ann Cools - I was very happy to come for the first time to Lisbon for a shoulder course. The participants were very enthusiastic and showed a large interest in shoulder problems and the physio therapeutic approach. The interaction with the participants was a very nice experience and I hope everyone learned from eachother.
Formação Clínica das Conchas - What can we wait from your Shoulder Course “SHOULDER REHABILITATION: WHAT IS NEW FROM A SCIENTIFIC AND CLINICAL POINT OF VIEW? ADVANCED COURSE - LEVEL 2”?
Ann Cools - The purpose of the second course is two-fold. On one hand I want to go deeper into some subjects that were briefly addressed in course level I, for instance a detailed rehabilitation program for scapular dysfunction, o multi directional instability of the shoulder, but weal so want to discuss new topics like biceps related pathology, order generative rotator cuff tears. Additionaly we focus also on the importance of objective measurements (of strength, mobility...) in the clinical practice and some addition altaping in specific patient populations. The course is again science- based but clinically applicable in the daily practice.
Formação Clínica das Conchas - In terms of investigation what is in your opinion now a days the “key topics” regarding the shoulder? Where should therese archers focus their attention?
Ann Cools - Research with in the area of shoulder rehabilitation is very wide, there is no limited list of key-topics since all aspects of shoulder pain and rehabilitation are relevant, from basic science over clinical trials towards pain science. At this moment, we from the Ghent University try to focus on exercise prescription based on several parameters, such as assumed EMG activity, biomechanical issues such as humeral head translations and changes in the subacromial area during exercises etc...we believe that the clinicians have a need for a science based exercise program for a variety of shoulder disorders, and research should help the clinicians providing them with some guide lines. We published a number of papers in the past looking at appropriate exercises for patients with scapular dysfunction and biceps related pathology. We currently perform research on instability patients (mainly non-traumatic instability), and plan some studies on the conservative treatment of degenerative e rotator cufftears, hope fully with some clinically relevant results in the near future.
