Formação Clínica das Conchas - What can we wait from your Shoulder Course?
Ann Cools - The purpose of this shoulder course is to present and discuss the state of the art of shoulder rehabilitation in general, and in a sportspecific setting in particular. The participants are invited to discuss current literature, debate on actual questions, dillemmas and uncertenties, and to practice science based, but clinically relevant treatment skills and rehabilitation exercises. This course is specifically aiming on physiotherapists, licenced in their country to perform their profession.
Formação Clínica das Conchas - What are your current and future projects you are working on?
Ann Cools - At present the upper limb research unit of the Ghent University has several ongoing research projects within the field of shoulder rehabilitation. We work on a preventive as well as on a rehabilitation perspective. Assessment as well as exercise therapy has been explored in our unit with respect to scientific evidence. With respect to evaluation, we work on functional testing of the upper limb in a sportspecific testing, developping normative reference values for overhead athletes, and screening of the risk factors for shoulder pain in a variety of sports, such as tennis, handball, volleyball, field hockey, swimming, gymnastics, mixed martial arts etc... Within the field of rehabilitation, our main expertise is in the field of exercise prescription (for instance for biceps related pathology, kinetic chain exercises, or scapular dyskinesis) based on detailed description of muscle recruitment during rehabilitation exercises.
Formação Clínica das Conchas - As a founder and as a past EUSSER (European Society for the Shoulder and Elbow Rehabilitation) President what can you tell to the Portuguese Physiotherapists about this Society?
Ann Cools - EUSSER was found in 2008 by a small group of idealists, both surgeons and physiotherapists, to create a bridge between the most important stakeholders in shoulder rehab: the surgeons and the physios. Ten years later, EUSSER is a performant society, uniting health professionals in Europe with a special interest in shoulder. EUSSER provides not only a strong network, but also science based courses, symposia, critically evaluated scientific papers etc. We strongly recommend to all physiotherapists interested in shoulder rehab to join EUSSER and share knowledge and expertise in Europe.
Thanks for your help. It will be really useful to have the answers to get your course even more widespread
